백수연(百壽宴)을 맞은 백선엽 장군
6·25 전쟁 다부동 전투 승리의 주역인 백선엽 예비역 대장의 생일잔치가 21일 서울 용산의 국방컨벤션센터에서 열렸다.
생일잔치는 백 장군의 백수(白壽·한국 나이 99세)를 축하하기 위해 미 8군이 준비했다.
1920년생인 백 장군은 23일 만 98세를 맞는다.
그는 6·25 전쟁 당시 미군이 ‘믿을 수 있는 파트너’라고 지칭했던 한국군 장성이다.
6·25 참전국을 대표해 해리 해리스 주한 미국대사와 사이먼 스미스 주한 영국 대사가 백 장군의 백수연에 참석했다.
주한미군에선 로버트 에이브럼스 한·미연합사령관(대장), 마이클 빌스 미 8군사령관(중장),
케네스 월즈바크 미 7공군 사령관(중장)이 자리를 함께했다.
또 정경두 국방부 장관과 박한기 합참의장, 박종진 육군 1군사령관(대장) 등 한국군 지휘부도 백 대장의 생일을 축하했다.
해리스 대사 등 생일잔치 참석자들은 한줄로 서서 백 장군과 부인 노인숙 여사를 영접했다.
백 장군의 자녀들은 “아버지는 우리 가족에게도 영웅이었다” 며
“자신의 공적을 늘 남에게 돌렸고 우리에겐 ‘자유는 공짜가 아니다’고 가르쳤다”고 말했다.
정 장관은 생일선물로 자개로 만든 지휘봉을 백 장군에게 건넸다.
에이브럼스 사령관은 무릎을 꿇고 백 장군에게 감사와 축하 메시지를 담은 책자를 전달했다.
김영규 연합사 공보관은 “이 책자엔 전임 주한미군 사령관들과 현 지휘부의 메시지와 사진 등이 들어있다”고 귀띔했다.
에이브럼스 사령관은 백 장군에게 “당신은 한·미 동맹의 초석과 같은 분”이라고 말했다. 백 장군은 “정말 고맙다”고 답했다.
에이브럼스 사령관의 아버지인 크레이튼 에이브럼스 미 예비역 육군 대장은 6·25 전쟁 당시 백 장군의 전우였다.
백 장군은 “과분한 자리를 마련해준 분들께 진심으로 감사한다”고 말했다. 그는 이날 생일잔치에 대해 몰랐다.
에이브럼스 사령관과의 점심식사 자리인 줄로만 알았다고 한다. 가족과 미 8군이 깜짝파티로 마련했기 때문이다.
백 장군은 2016년부터 다리가 불편해져 휠체어로 다니지만 여전히 정정하다.
6·25 전쟁 때 주요 상황을 지금도 또렷이 기억한다. 매일 용산 전쟁기념관에 있는 사무실에 출근한다.
백 장군은 6·25 전쟁 초반인 1950년 8월 대구에 진출하려던 북한군을 다부동 전투에서 물리쳤다.
이 승리로 북한군의 파죽지세는 꺾였고 한국군과 유엔군은 낙동강 전선의 방어선을 다졌다.
백 장군을 지켜보던 미군이 그의 진가를 인정한 계기였다.
6·25 전쟁 중 더글러스 맥아더 원수, 매튜 리지웨이 육군 참모총장 등 미군 지휘관들과 친분을 쌓았다.
이 때문에 미군 전체에서도 그의 이름이 잘 알려졌고, 역대 주한미군 사령관이 한국에 취임하면
그에게 깍듯하게 ‘전입신고’를 하는 게 관례다. 주한미군은 2013년 그를 명예 미 8군 사령관으로 임명했다.

A Touching Scene
It was a quite amazing scene shown in a photo that was recently reported on the news dated on November 21, 2018.
It was a beautiful scene that the US Ambassador to Seoul, Mr. Harry Harris( former commander of the US Pacific Command) was neeling down to greet a legendary figure, former ROKA general Paik Sun-yop,
the Korean War hero particularly back in the early 1950s.
When the general in a wheelchair was greeted courteously by the US Ambassador to Korea and the US military commanders including the new commander of the US Forces Korea (USFK) general Robert B. Abrams, the old war hero was just entering into the National Defense Convention Center in Yongsan, Seoul, Korea where a surprising celebration party sponsored
by the US Eighth Army stationing in Korea was about to be held on the occasion of his 98th birthday.
Needless to emphasize, in this connection, one of our government organizations for instance, the Ministry of Defense should have prepared such a banquet in advance for the larger-than-life war hero by inviting domestic and foreign celebrities including the US representatives. In our country, general Paik's patriotic achievements deserve respectful treatment with the highest level of courtesy.
In light of this, it has become a matter of regret that such a celebration event for the national war hero was first honored by the USFK not by the ROK side. It is a case of putting the cart before the horse. Anyway, the United States Forces Korea(USFK) should receive a generous share of praise from fellow citizens of South Korea for the courteous reception given to the legendary figure.
