The history of the Cheboksary HPP started in 1931.
They wanted to make the deep draft water route to unite the Caspian, Baltic, White and Black Seas.
It was planned to make ten waterworks along the whole way.
Only three of them were finished before the war. The Cheboksary HPP had to become one of them.
The design task was coordinated on the 22 of January, 1967, this day is considered to be the day when the HPP construction was started.

In 1968 they started preparations for building the hydraulic complex.
They processed more than 70 million of m3 of soil (43 500 square miles).
The banner says “The first cubic meter of concrete for the building of the HPP is our present to the XXVth Congress of the CPSU.”
2,5 million of cubic meters of concrete lay under the basement of the HPP.
The banner says: “The 1000000th cubic meter of concrete is our present to the 61st anniversary of the October revolution”.
“Decisions of the XXVIth Congress of the CPSU are to be brought to life!”
This is how the whole construction site looked like in general.
A working wheel is mounted.
All in all they installed eighteen hydraulic components with kaplan turbines, where the diameter of one working wheel was ten meters (32 ft) and umbrella-type synchronous generators had capacity of 78 MW.
Their main goal was to start running the HPP by January, 1st, 1981. All together they achieved the goal. The workers had to meet the New Year in the turbine hall, snow was falling right on their heads because there was no ceiling yet. But they were so happy!
