On December, 22nd, Chiryurtskaya Hydropower Plant-1 on the Sulak River is turning 50. In this article, we want to tell you about it, show some file footages and museum exhibits showing organization of the plant.
Soviet scientists have always known about Dagestan’ potential in water power (mostly due to its Sulak River) and began building first hydropower plans before WWII. When the war began, they had to freeze construction works and were able to resume it only in 1948.
Modern Chiryurtskaya Hydropower Complex consists of three power stations: Chiryurtskaya Hydropower Plant-1 and 2 and Gelbakhskaya Hydropower Plant-3.

The water reservoir has three purposes: power production, irrigation and water supply. It has a length of 10 km, width of 0.82 km and depth of 12 m.
That dark blue building is Gelbakhskaya Hydropower Plant, it was built in 2006.
The diversion canal is 3460 m long, 7 m wide and 8.8 m deep.

Preparatory works began in 1954 when they prepared construction sites, built power lines, houses for workers, storages
and other facilities. In 1955, they began excavating and by 1956, they built the first coffer dam.
The underwater construction of one of the power stations completed in 1957.
After they completed main facilities construction, they started building the canal head
and the body of the dam and the work’d lasted since 1958 till 1961.

22 December, 1961, Chiryurtskaya HPP-1 was put into operation.
